Car rental insurance in Morocco

Every rental car in Morocco is insured. The real question is what remains yours to pay if something happens: the excess. Here is how to read what the agency offers.

Always included: third-party liability

In Morocco, third-party liability insurance is compulsory for every vehicle on the road (Insurance Code, Law 17-99). It covers the damage you cause to others: people, vehicles, property. It does not cover the car you rent.

Damage to the rental car: the excess

Most agencies also cover damage to the car (often called CDW), but with an excess: the most you pay if the car is damaged. It is often close to the deposit amount, and it is taken from the deposit.

Some agencies offer to reduce or remove the excess for a daily supplement. Compare that supplement with the excess and the length of your rental.

Common exclusions

Even with a reduced excess, some damage is often excluded. Check the contract for:

  • tyres, wheels and the underbody;
  • glass, mirrors and headlights;
  • lost keys and wrong fuel;
  • driving on unpaved tracks, or by a driver not on the contract;
  • driving under the influence of alcohol.

Questions to ask before you confirm

  • How much is the excess?
  • Can it be reduced, and for how much per day?
  • What is excluded?
  • What to do and whom to call after an accident or breakdown?

On Darivo, ask the agency in your request: the answer stays in writing in your inbox, and the full insurance terms are in the contract you sign at handover.

After an accident

  • Get to safety, and call emergency services if anyone is hurt.
  • Call the agency before moving the car, unless it is dangerous.
  • Fill in an accident report (constat amiable) with the other driver, and take photos.
  • Keep a copy of every document for the agency.

Frequently asked questions

Does my credit card cover the rental?

Some premium cards include rental insurance, with their own terms and countries. Check with your bank that Morocco is covered and what to do if you claim.

Is insurance included in the price shown on Darivo?

The compulsory insurance and the agency’s own cover are in the price. Only an optional excess waiver, if the agency offers one, is extra.

Can I drive the car outside the city?

Usually yes, anywhere in Morocco on paved roads. Some agencies restrict tracks or certain regions: check the contract, and tell the agency where you plan to go.

Ready to find your car?
